The Information Technology (IT) division is responsible for operation of the City’s technical infrastructure; implementation, maintenance and support of business system applications; and oversight of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Technical Operations IT provides ongoing technical infrastructure support and administration for the City of Encinitas and the San Dieguito Water District. This includes approximately 25 servers, 250 desktop PCs, 40 printers, email and Internet services, and the City’s voice and data network. To provide a secure and reliable work environment, IT regularly updates computer hardware and software, implements virus protection and security solutions, and performs Disaster Recovery testing. The IT Help Desk responds to service requests from City staff and provides troubleshooting support on PC desktops, office automation and specialized software applications, electronic mail, peripherals, phone and voicemail services, file and print sharing, network access and security, and other technical areas. IT develops and implements policies and procedures for the appropriate use and protection of the City’s network and computer resources. Business System Applications IT implements and supports the City's financial and governmental software applications. Departmental needs are assessed and appropriate hardware/software solutions are purchased, set-up and maintained through the IT division. IT maintains and updates the City website which provides information to the public regarding City departments, Council meetings and special events, and online services such as class registration and request for assistance. IT is responsible for executing the City’s Technology Master Plan. Key initiatives include implementation of an efficient land management and permitting system, GIS initiatives and implementation of e-government (using Internet technologies to provide information and services to the public and to optimize internal business processes). E-government deliverables include online document management, redesign of the City’s website to improve user navigation, increased online services for citizens, and implementation of an Intranet for information sharing among City staff.
