Q. How do I establish water service for my home? [ top of page ]
A. To establish service, please call (760) 633-2650.

Q. How do I know which water district I'm in and how do I contact them? [ top of page ]
A. The City of Encinitas is served by two water districts - the San Dieguito Water District (SDWD) and the Olivenhain Municipal Water District (OMWD). In general, the San Dieguito Water District serves most properties west of El Camino Real while the Olivenhain Municipal Water District serves the remainder of the City. There are some exceptions to this rule and if you need further clarification you may contact the SDWD at (760) 633-2709 or OMWD at (760) 753-6466 or click here to visit their website.

Q. Where is my water meter located and how do I read it? [ top of page ]
A. Most meters are located near the street in front of the property. Some are located in alleys or easements behind the property. Look for a concrete or a plastic-covered box at ground level. After removing the meter box lid, check the serial numbered cap on the meter dial against the meter serial number on your bill. If the identification cap is broken or missing, compare the current reading with the last read on your bill. This reading should show a reasonable increase.

Reading the meter is as simple as reading the odometer on a vehicle. The last two numbers to the right are tenths and hundredths and are typically placed on a different color field. Read only the numbers to the left of the tenths and hundredths to determine your meter reading. For further assistance, please call customer service at (760) 633-2650.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. How can I tell if I have a leak? [ top of page ]
A. Ensure no water is being used at the service location. Next, go to the meter box and remove the cover to observe the meter dial. If movement is observed on the dial it is probable that water has been left on or is dripping, or there is a customer-side leak. Check all water outlets, visible pipes, toilets, irrigation valves, sprinklers, etc. It is the customer's responsibility to maintain and repair water service materials on the customer's side of the meter.

Q. What is the service charge on my bill for? [ top of page ]
A. The service charge pays to maintain the complex infrastructure of reservoirs, pipes, valves, fire hydrants and meter services. It also pays for the maintenance and administrative personnel that provide a reliable and safe water supply to District customers.
